Emergency dental care in Gränna: who to call, when, and what it costs

There is a particular kind of helplessness in waking at three in the morning with a throbbing jaw and realising it is Sunday. Who do you call? Do you have to drive to Jönköping? Can it wait until Monday?

These questions are far easier to answer in advance than in the middle of the night. This guide is written for people in Gränna, on Visingsö and along the shore of Vättern, and it covers the parts that are genuinely confusing: who to call at which hour, what you can do yourself while you wait, and what an emergency visit costs. Read the first two sections now and keep the rest for later.

Start here: how urgent is it?

Almost all toothache feels urgent to the person who has it. But dental care sorts problems by how quickly they must be dealt with, and that ranking decides who you should call.

If you are unsure which row you are in, call and ask. We would much rather take a call that turns out to be reassuring than have you sit at home with an infection for two days.

How emergency dental care works in Gränna, hour by hour

This is the part nobody spells out properly, and the hardest thing to find at half past ten at night.

Weekdays, during our opening hours

Call us on 0390-100 08. We prioritise emergency patients and always do our best to find a slot the same day. We are open Monday 09.00-18.00, Tuesday to Thursday 09.00-16.30 and Friday 09.00-14.00. You do not need to be an existing patient, and you do not need a referral.

Call early in the day rather than late. An emergency slot at eleven is a very different thing from one that cannot be fitted in before closing.

Weekdays, after closing

If you have a regular dentist, call them first. When the clinic is closed, the answering machine gives you information about the on-call dentist. If you are a Folktandvården patient, out-of-hours calls are transferred to a duty clinic.

Folktandvården in Gränna is at Hävdevägen 31, in the same building as the health centre, open Monday to Thursday 07.00-17.00 and Friday 07.00-13.00. If you cannot reach an on-call dentist through your own clinic, you can call the nearest Folktandvården clinic.

Saturday, Sunday and public holidays

Between 08.15 and 10.15 you call your Folktandvården clinic to book. You are referred to the on-call dentist, and patients are seen only by prior arrangement on the phone - there is no drop-in. After 10.15, call 1177.

An emergency visit on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday is charged at the weekend rate, meaning the ordinary price plus 50 per cent. Worth knowing before you set off, not afterwards.

Evenings and nights

For serious jaw and tooth injuries during evenings, nights and weekends, call 1177. You will be put through to the on-call maxillofacial service at Länssjukhuset Ryhov.

That service exists for injuries and conditions that need immediate specialist treatment. An aching wisdom tooth at two in the morning usually falls into the "call in the morning" category instead. But that judgement is not yours to make alone, it is made by the nurse on the phone.

Forty kilometres to Ryhov: what makes Gränna different

Most articles about emergency dental care in this county are written from Jönköping, where the duty clinic is around the corner. From here the map looks different.

The distance

Gränna is a little over forty kilometres north of Jönköping. If you are referred to the duty service at Ryhov, that is the E4 southbound, and the hospital sits just south of the city with its own exit from the motorway. Without a car, regional buses 121 and 122 run between Gränna and Jönköping, but check the last bus home before you travel in the evening.

If you live on Visingsö

Count the ferry. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and the last ordinary departure is late in the evening, with night crossings on Friday and Saturday that must be booked by phone. If you are in pain on the island and thinking of coming across: call first, travel second. Standing at Gränna harbour at seven in the evening and discovering that everything is closed makes for a bad night.

If you live just north of Gränna

There is a boundary here that surprises people. Gränna belongs to Jönköping municipality and Region Jönköpings län. Drive a few kilometres north to Ödeshög and you are in Region Östergötland, where the out-of-hours rules are completely different.

Östergötland runs a duty clinic in Skäggetorp in Linköping, open on weekdays and on Saturday, Sunday and public holiday mornings, plus a weekday duty service in Hageby in Norrköping. It is not the same system as here. Knowing which side of the county line you belong to before you start calling saves time exactly when you have least of it.

If you are visiting Gränna

In summer the number of people in Gränna multiplies, and toothache comes along on holiday. You are entitled to emergency dental care anywhere in Sweden. You do not need to be registered with a clinic, and you do not need to travel home to be treated.

If you are visiting from another country, ask about payment on the phone. The rules differ depending on where you are insured and whether you go to a public or a private provider, and that is a far more pleasant conversation to have before treatment than after.

What you can do yourself while you wait

None of this cures the cause. But it can make the night bearable.

• Take over-the-counter painkillers as directed on the packet. Follow the dosage on the packaging and do not combine different products on your own without asking a pharmacist or calling 1177.
• Never place a tablet directly against the gum. This old household remedy still circulates and it is actively harmful. Acetylsalicylic acid against the mucous membrane gives you a chemical burn on top of the pain you already have. Tablets are for swallowing.
• Cool the outside of the cheek, do not warm it. A cold cloth or ice pack against the cheek for about twenty minutes helps. Heat does the opposite: it increases blood flow and can make an infection swell faster.
• Sleep with your head raised. An extra pillow reduces the pressure in the jaw. Toothache that worsens the moment you lie down is a well-known pattern.
• Rinse with lukewarm salt water. One teaspoon of salt in two decilitres of lukewarm water, rinsed gently. It cleans and gives temporary relief for irritated gums.
• Chew on the other side and avoid the triggers: cold, hot, sweet and acidic.
• Temporary filling material from the pharmacy can cover a lost filling for a day or two. It is a plaster, not a repair, and that tooth still needs looking at.

One more thing: alcohol does not relieve toothache, it only feels that way briefly. Combined with painkillers it is a bad idea as well.

A knocked-out tooth: the first minutes decide

This is the one situation where minutes genuinely count, and where what you do before reaching the dentist can decide whether the tooth survives. It is also where most people go wrong out of pure good intentions.

A permanent tooth that has been knocked out

1. Hold the tooth by the crown, the chewing part. Do not touch the root. The cells on the root surface are what allow the tooth to reattach, and they do not survive being rubbed off.
2. If the tooth is dirty: rinse it gently for no more than ten seconds under cold running water, or in saline. Do not brush, scrape or dry it.
3. Put the tooth back in its socket and bite gently on a clean handkerchief to hold it in place.
4. If you cannot put it back: store the tooth in milk, in saline, or in the mouth under the tongue or in the cheek. Never in water. Plain water destroys the cells on the root surface.
5. Seek dental care immediately, whatever the hour. The sooner the tooth is back in place, the better the chance it heals.

A knocked-out milk tooth

Never put a knocked-out milk tooth back. It can damage the permanent tooth waiting in the jaw under the gum. Wrap the tooth in paper and bring it with you so the dentist can look in the mouth and assess it.

A chipped fragment

Here the advice about water is reversed: keep the fragment in cold water and bring it along. A chipped piece of enamel can often be bonded back on, especially if you come within a day.

What does an emergency visit cost?

Cost is one of the most common reasons people wait too long, which is a shame, because an emergency visit is cheaper than the treatment needed after another week of waiting.

With us an emergency visit starts at 425 SEK. We never charge more than the national reference prices set by TLV, and you can compare us with any other practice through Tandpriskollen. What the visit ends up costing depends on what needs doing, and you are told the price before treatment starts.

Three more things affect what you pay:

• The general dental subsidy (ATB). If you are 20-23 or 67 and over you receive 600 SEK per year, and everyone in between receives 300 SEK per year. A temporary rule applies during 2026: if you turn 66 this year you receive 600 SEK. We deduct it directly from your invoice, you do not need to apply for anything.
• High-cost protection. Above 3,000 SEK of dental costs in a twelve-month period you are reimbursed 50 per cent, and above 15,000 SEK you are reimbursed 85 per cent, calculated on the reference prices.
• Children and young people. Dental care is free through the year you turn 19. Since the start of 2025 the age limit has been 19, not 23 as before, which many people still miss.

If you use the Folktandvården duty service on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the weekend rate adds 50 per cent on top of the ordinary price. That is another reason to call on the Friday if you can already feel something building.

What an emergency visit with us looks like

An emergency visit has one goal, and that is to remove the pain. The definitive treatment is then planned calmly afterwards.

1. We ask briefly about the pain: how long, where, what sets it off, whether there is fever or swelling.
2. We examine and take an X-ray if needed. The X-ray is often what separates a crack from a root infection.
3. We treat what hurts, usually by anaesthetising and dealing with the cause.
4. You are told what remains, what it costs and when it should be done. No treatment starts before you know the price.

How to reduce the risk of ending up here again

Most emergency visits are not accidents. They are things that built up slowly: an old filling that cracked, a root that became infected under a crown, a wisdom tooth that has been pressing for months. The body almost always gives a warning, and that warning rarely arrives on a Sunday.

• Go for regular check-ups. The interval is set by your risk, not by the calendar.
• Do not wait out sensitivity that has become routine. Sensitivity that lingers after you rinse with cold water is worth a visit.
